Dangerous FavorsEXCERPT INT GARAGE AFTERNOON Pete swings the bucket off the workbench, letting it clatter into Eddie’s feet. PETE I don’t want guns around my family. And if they’re illegal— EDDIE Everything’s cool, ace. They’re not loaded. It was just a favor for a friend. You owe me a few favors, don’t ya? PETE Leave us out of favors like this. Eddie calculates and cracks a big smile. He picks up the bucket and slugs Pete casually. EDDIE Sure ‘nough, Pete. Now let’s see ’bout them steaks. PETE Hold it, I’m not— Eddie spins on his heel and walks out. KITCHEN Following Eddie, Pete halts at the sight of Steve and Carl at the open freezer. They pull plastic-wrapped packs from behind the frozen food and drop them into a gym bag. EXT BACKYARD AFTERNOON Alarmed but uncertain, Sandy watches DJ pour charcoal into the barbecue while Eddie squirts lighter fluid. Pete brushes past Sandy. PETE Go inside. Kelli, Rob, help your mother. Kelli skips in. Rob eyes Pete’s grim face as he hurries past, too. PETE I suppose the stuff in the freezer is a favor, too? EDDIE Ya gotta understand, Pete. I can’t keep it at my place — Jacki’d be into it. PETE Eddie. I want you to take your dope, or whatever it is, and leave. Steve and Carl approach with the gym bag. Eddie lights the barbecue. The flames roar. PETE Now. Before I call the cops. Kelli’s kitten mews at Eddie’s feet. He picks it up and strokes it. EDDIE You got a nice family, Pete. He dangles the kitten by its neck over the barbecue, slowly squeezing off its cries. EDDIE Be too bad if anything happened to your nice family. Pete lunges at him. Carl shoves between them with a gun on Pete. CARL You’re convenient, Crowe, not necessary. Eddie lays a hand on the gun. He drops the singed kitten into Pete’s hands. EDDIE Let’s give my pal here a chance to think. |
