Jean Sensel, Communications Specialist

My how-to business articles and small business profiles are from an insider view. If you're an editor looking for a seasoned business owner and business writer, give me a call: 253-531-8520, or use my e-mail quicklink in the right-hand column.

To the right is the first page of a small business profile. To enlarge the text, click on the page. Use the "back" button to return to this page.

For sixteen years my husband and I owned a retail business, which I managed. (Prior to that I was Director of the BBA program at a private university, then manager of an exclusive yacht club.) A seasoned colleague warned me: "If you want to stay in business in this state, you'd better be in politics."

That advice proved to be true. I joined a trade association, then the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB), became a member of NFIB-Washington State Guardian Council (an advisory committee to our lobbyist) and actively, and often successfully, lobbied for a better business regulatory and tax environment. Ultimately I ran for my state's House of Representatives. Whew! was the last an experience! Only when I laugh...
